Do you remember the “hay days” of the neighborhood dairy farm? The sights and smells of the wagons, or the silage? Or the tobacco fields with their distinctive barns? You may be surprised to learn that our region was once the main supplier of processed meats. Cultural and economic factors have greatly altered the mix of farm products over the years. Find out why and what used to fill up the pastures and fields around us.
Join Town Historian John Dwyer for the Southbury Land Trust’s First Day Hike, Weds., January 1 at 1 p.m., at Platt Farm on Flood Bridge Road in Southbury. Hikers will be led along the ag fields to the Pomperaug River and onto the Marc J. Taylor Memorial Greenway Trail. The hike continues on to rejoin Flood Bridge Road.
